May 2013

In May we are continuing to explore teaching from Paul's letter to the Galatians. Galatia is that part of central Asia Minor where Paul and Barnabas went on the first missionary journey (see Acts 13:14 to 14:23). They had the opportunity to plant several churches in the Roman province of Galatia. Paul visited them again on his second journey with Silas (see Acts 16:1-5).

Some Jewish believers came along and taught that salvation was dependent on other things - the Jewish ritual of circumcision and keeping the Law of Moses. They went further, became personal and tried to discredit Paul as a true apostle. Paul may have written this letter around AD 55 while he was in Ephesus (see Acts 19). The letter is very strongly worded – see 1:8 “accursed” and 3:1 “O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you?” He writes to the Galatian churches both to confirm his status as an apostle and to reinforce that the gospel is by faith alone in Christ alone.

The message is still appropriate for today – in Cambodia and in other parts of the world. Pray that God will open our eyes to see great eternal truths as we study this letter together at CFSR over the coming weeks.

April 2013

During April and May we will be exploring teaching from Paul's letter to the Galatians. February 2013

This month we have a weekend of teaching from Malcolm Duncan, a pastor and teacher from the UK. From 8 to 10 February 2013 he will take three meetings under the theme of "Living counter-culturally".

On the other three weeks we will continue to look at faith in practice in the lives of some Old Testament Characters. We explore Moses, Sarah and Rahab all of whom are mentioned in the "Gallery of Faith" recorded in Hebrews 11.

In January at the start of a new year, we have an opportunity to reflect on the past and prepare for whatever God has in store for us in the coming twelve months. What are the plans you are making - and how much are you allowing God to direct your paths and guide your steps? We will then look at how this worked in practice for some Old Testament Characters as we explore the lives of some of those mentioned in the "Gallery of Faith" mentioned in Hebrews 11.

Families

Faithful to hear and obey the Word of God (James 1:21-25; John 14:23). Pray that the Word of God will be the foundation on which our families build. Ask God to give each one a hunger for the Word of God. Pray that they will put into practice what God commands in His Word.

Active in serving Christ and His church (Hebrews 10:25; Mark 8:34-38). Plead with God to create in our families a longing to follow Jesus and to serve in His church. Pray that each family member would know Christ and would faithfully serve Him.

Maintain their prayer lives (Luke 18:1; Colossians 4:2). Pray that each member would have a heart for prayer. Ask God to create in each family member a longing to spend time with Him. Ask God to release a spirit of prayer in the family. Pray that the family would establish a family altar.

Introduce others to Jesus (Matthew 28:19-20; Acts 1:8). Pray that the family would be witnesses for Christ both with their lives and their lips. Ask God to give the family boldness in standing for Jesus Christ. Plead with Him to remove anything that would hinder them from being powerful witnesses.

Love as God loves (1 John 4:7,11; 1 Corinthians 13:4-8). Pray that our families will love each other with deep and unconditional love. Ask God to remove anything that might hinder them from loving each other.

Yield themselves to God's protection (John 8:44; Ephesians 6:10-20). Pray that families will confess and repent of sin.

December 2012

In December we come to the season of Advent. We remember the first coming of Jesus as a baby at Bethlehem and look forward to his final coming as the judge of all the earth.

Advent - preparation.

November 2012

During November we will be completing our series in Hebrews.

The letter was written to Hebrew believers who had found the going tough. They were in danger of giving up. The Apostle reminds them of God’s revelation (1:1) through Jesus (1:1-2) and the work that he did (1:3). The key message could be summed up by Hebrews 12:3

“Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.”

Most of the thirteen chapters of Hebrews contain teaching which answers questions that the believers were asking. The Apostle ends (from 10:19) with an exhortation to keep on keeping on because “we have such a high priest” (8:1). Pray that we will learn together from God’s word over the coming weeks.

October 2012

During October we are starting a new series in Hebrews.

Most of us dip into Hebrews (where there are many well-known and much-loved verses) but don’t try to understand the letter in its entirety. If we allow this to happen, we will be in danger of misunderstanding the Old Testament. Hebrews is the best commentary of the Old Testament that has ever been written. It focusses on the Lord Jesus – the greatest revelation of God to his people. As we study Hebrews over the coming weeks, my prayer is that we will get a greater vision of what the Lord Jesus Christ has done, what he is doing now, and what he will do in the future.

September 2012

In September we will conclude our look at Jesus’ teaching using parables only recorded in Luke’s gospel. Many of ‘Doctor’ Luke's unique parables highlight his concerns – caring deeply for the weak, the sick, and the downtrodden.

So since we find ourselves fashioned into all these excellently formed and marvellously functioning parts in Christ’s body, let’s just go ahead and be what we were made to be, without enviously or pridefully comparing ourselves with each other, or trying to be something we aren’t.

August 2012

In August and September we will continue to explore Jesus’ teaching using parables only recorded in Luke’s gospel. Many of ‘Doctor’ Luke's unique parables highlight his concerns – caring deeply for the weak, the sick, and the downtrodden.

Parables are a significant characteristic of Christ’s teaching. People could easily remember and share them with others. The parables were also rich, spiritual metaphors. The deeper meanings would unfold as a disciple progressed in the Christian walk. Pray that God will teach us truths for today as we reflect on them over the coming weeks.

PRAYER POINTS

• May the Lord show us his way and may we obediently follow him

• May the Lord teach us his path and guide us in our trials, tribulations and hardships.

• May the Lord guide us in his truth in all that we do.

• May the Lord help us to live a life trusting and relying on him

• May we worship God in his spirit and truth.

June 2012

One of the features of life in the 21^st Century is activity. Many things compete for our attention. Electronic devices and gadgets which should help us have become our “masters”. At one time we would have waited weeks for a reply to a letter. Now we want instant answers!

No wonder that people – even in many parts of Cambodia – face exhaustion, burnout, tiredness and even breakdown. Sadly Christians are not isolated from this. Indeed we can be very driven people, often want to give everything for God but not understanding our own needs and limitations!

In June we will explore the Bible’s teaching on “rest”. And we will be looking at Jesus example of “working from a place of rest”.

May 2012

In May we are returning to Peter's first letter. Having studied the first two chapters some months ago, we will now complete the final three chapters. Of course Peter has featured significantly in the story of Jesus' arrest, death and resurrection that we have been looking at during recent weeks.

Now we will explore how Peter draws on his experiences of being with Jesus and his joys and failures to teach the growing church - and us today.

April 2012

In April, we will experience the climax of our faith at Easter. We are having a Good Friday meditation around the cross at the church on 6th April from 6.00pm to 7.00pm. The our Easter Celebration at the usual time of 4.00pm on Easter Sunday. During the remainder of the month we will be looking at the impact of the Resurrection on the early disciples.

Paul tells us in Ephesians (1:19-20) that this "resurrection power" is available to us today.

February 2012

A celebration of love

February is the month when love is in the air - 14th is "St Valentine's Day". Many of the bigger shops in Siem Reap will be trying to "cash in" on this "celebration" which has recently been introduced into Cambodian life. This year - being a leap year - there is an extra day in February - 29th February. In some countries this is taken as the day when a girl can propose marriage to a man rather then the initiative being taken by the man!

Two couples connected with CFSR are getting married this month. On Sunday 19th Bean Shin (who works with the NEI Team) will be marrying Seang Heng. They are both from Kampong Thom but want to have a Christian wedding here in Siem Reap. I will be assisting in the service at the New Life Wesleyian Church (near the Salina Hotel) at 2.30pm. Please attend and support this young couple if possible.

Then, a few days later, on Friday 24th February in Phnom Penh, Claudine Horala (a member of the WEC Team) will marry Sophanny Mok. Please pray for both these couples as they begin their journeys together and seek to serve God in the coming days.

At the end of this month we will begin a series looking at God’s “love story” for us in John’s gospel. We will be exploring “Identity” – both who God is and who we are – in the weeks leading up to Easter.

January 2012

A new year - 2012! What will it bring? (apart from an extra day!)

How will we see God work? In us, in our friends, in those whom we meet, in our communities, in our cities, in our nations and in our world? Are you looking forward to it with a sense of anticipation and excitement; or with apprehension and fear?

It is a good thing to "take stock" of our lives as we begin a new year. We will be doing that collectively through the teaching in January. Pray for the fellowship and for each other that we will all take time to review the past and look forward with anticipation as individuals, within families and in the various teams to which we belong.

A Message of Hope

We begin October by considering how God moulds us and how we can encourage each other as he changes us. We will then explore together the first two chapters of 1 Peter.

As God’s word is opened up week by week pray that the Holy Spirit will take the spoken word and bring it to life in each of our hearts.

As part of that focus, on Sunday 9th October we will celebrate our 5th Anniversary together using the theme of "Encourage one another daily".

…Multi-cultural Workshop – Julie Green (SIL)...

We all live and work in a cross-cultural setting and often in multicultural teams. Misunderstandings can happen as a result.

Julie commented after a recent workshop in Phnom Penh:

Some were surprised to learn that other cultures had a rhyme and reason (and were not just randomly irrational as they seemed before). Some learned that they have to ask questions and share with their teammates to be able to understand and be understood. Some learned more about our amazing God – how He created this diversity & is reflected in it.

The Workshop is free. There will be six morning sessions:

Wed 12, Thurs 13 & Fri 14 October from 8-11.30am

Wed 19, Thurs 20 & Fri 21 October from 8-11.30am

We are glad to have Dr Fred Toke visiting us this month from Singapore. He is the Clinical Director of Celebrating Life Resource Centre, a professional counseling clinic and training provider in Singapore. Dr. Toke is an Ordained Minister with the Church of God (Cleveland, TN) denomination and he oversees COG's churches in Singapore and Malaysia. He also serves as a Board Member of the People for Care & Learning. He is married to Agnes and they have 2 teenagers, Matthew and Tiffany.

Small Group Ministry :
Following from our prayer and vision meeting, the fellowship will be forming small groups to help:
- Build friendships and support within the fellowship
- Provide times of more focused teaching
- Provide an environment where people can share their needs and requests with others
- Meet the needs of specific groups (seekers, new believers, youth)

There will be a coordinating meeting for those interested in becoming a leader/co-leader for one of these groups on Wednesday, October 14th 6pm at the Friendship Center ( ) Please RSVP to Simon if you will be attending and bring any relevant materials that you may have to the meeting.

Sunday School Ministry
There is a new bulletin board with Sunday School news and displaying the children’s projects. Have a look at what they are doing!
